If you want to get out into nature – but not too far – a new luxury retreat will let you camp out under the stars without leaving New York City.
The first-ever seasonal overnight accommodation on the historic Governors Island will open up this summer thanks to Collective Retreats. Governors Island previously served as a military base and was closed to the public for 200 years. Since 2012, regeneration efforts have seen the opening of public parks filled with art, a hill covered in slides, fields of hammocks and of course, incredible views of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. Travellers can get to the island by taking a free ferry that runs from Lower Manhattan.
The new luxury retreat will open in May, giving travellers a chance to go glamping on the island before it closes for the season in October. The site will have room for about 100 overnight guests – and will offer hotel-style service and dining at the site. For a truly spectacular event, the whole site can be rented out for weddings or retreats. There will also be dining options and a public space at the site for programming, and activities for people visiting the island. Collective Retreats is even working with local groups to create events that will “act as a platform for the local community to experience the island in unique ways, such as live music, innovative dining, wellness retreats, thought leadership summits and much more”.
There will be a variety of tent styles available, including private luxury tents with en-suite bathrooms, or bell tens with shared bathrooms. The bathrooms have full-flush toilets, rain-style hot showers and environmentally-friendly amenities. The new site will also have weekday discounted rates that will begin at $75 per night, along with a new select service model that will begin at $125 per night.
“Governors Island offers one of New York City’s most accessible getaways, and now, for the first time ever, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and inspiring views from this magical place under the stars” said Michael Samuelian, President and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island in a statement. “As we continue to expand our season and the diversity of our offerings, today’s announcement is an important step towards realizing our vision for a year-round, 24/7 Governors Island for all New Yorkers.” Learn more about Collective Governors Island or join the wait-list for bookings here.
