Welcome to Helambu Trek
The trek starts from Sundarijal at the east end of the Kathmandu Valley, making a half-loop through the middle hills of the Helambu region to the northeast of Kathmandu. There is not a lot of high mountain scenery but there is a surprisingly amount of uphill walking. The region was hit hard by the 2015 earthquake but most lodges have been rebuilt. For details of the first three days, see the final few days of the Gosainkund Trek in reverse.
From the high point at Tharepati (3640m) there is a big descent to an overnight at Melamchi Gaon and then on to Tarke Ghyang. From Tarke Ghyang there is a tough but worthwhile detour to climb 3770m Yangri Peak for a fabulous mountain panorama stretching from Langtang Lirung to Rolwaling. Most people then take a bus from Thimbu back to Kathmandu.
