Five kilometres from Shimoda, Shira-hama (白浜海岸; meaning 'white-sand beach') is a mellow resort town set back from the sea that fills up with Kantō-area surfers and students during holiday weekends. At the north end of the main beach you'll find the 2400-year-old Shirahama-jinja shrine with its photogenic torii (gate) overhanging the ocean.
