Welcome to Sivasagar
Sivasagar (Sivsagar, Sibsagar) holds a special importance in Assam as the heartland of the Ahom kingdom, which was founded in 1228 and ended up ruling up most of Assam from the 16th to 19th centuries. Palaces, temples and other monuments from the Ahom heyday make for a great day's sightseeing in the countryside around Sivasagar, and this is also a useful transit point into Nagaland.
Sivasagar takes its name ('ocean of Shiva’) from the large, graceful reservoir at its centre. Away from the couple of main roads and the hectic, noisy bus station this is a relatively relaxed and clean city.
