Gendun Choephel Memorial Hall

Museum in Lhasa

On the southern side of the Barkhor Circuit, this dull museum focuses on a fascinating character. Choephel (1903–51) was a monk, poet, translator, scientist, travel writer, painter, linguist, medic, sexologist, scholar of Sanskrit and all-round nonconformist. The museum suffers from a dogmatic note in its commentary; you may find your eyes glazing over when text expounds on the 'caesaropapist feudal serf system'.
