    It’s almost inevitable that you’ll need to refuel when exploring Pingjiang Lu and this funky, hidden coffeeshop, serves a killer espresso. Besides offering a small collection of cookies and cakes available throughout the day, it has simple croissant-and-coffee breakfast deals (¥25) until 10.30am. Keep your eyes peeled for the square black sign facing Pingjiang Lu.

    Upmarket bar and restaurant with a small rooftop terrace, serving craft beers from Taipei-based Zhǎngmén Brewing Company. This is the company’s only brewery in mainland China (there’s a tap room in Shēnzhèn) and most of the 30-plus beers on offer here are brewed on site.

    Běijīng’s excellent Bookworm wormed its way down to Sūzhōu, serving as a kind of comfy cultural hub, library, bookshop and cafe. The food is crowd-pleasing (lots of Western options) and the cold beers include Tsingtao and Erdinger. There are readings, live music, an open mic and you can borrow or buy books. Ask about its literary festival, held in March.

    Cafe by day, craft-beer bar by night, this trendy place tucked down a little road off Shanghai Lu is popular with students from nearby Nanjing University. Owner Max is friendly and speaks good English, while the cold, imported bottled beers are a welcome relief on a hot summer's evening.

    Flamingo bar opened its doors in 2018, when friendly co-owner Zhendong threw in his career as a painter to pursue his love of brewing. There are five fresh beers on tap and the osthmanthus ale is delicious.

    Yǔ Zhī Jiā Teahouse

    Pretty teahouse in a historic wood-fronted building on the edge of the canal that runs parallel to Pingjiang Lu. Tall windows that open directly onto the water make this is a perfect place to retreat and peoplewatch. Green tea is served by the glass (from ¥58), while speciality black teas like pu'er are offered by the pot (from ¥168).

    Besides doing coffee and cake and having a resident cat, this cute cafe has its own shtick. Purchase a postcard and request a date (potentially years in the future) for it to be mailed. There's a good selection of postcards and pretty stationery. International postage rates are reasonable.
