    Demo Bar

With a prime riverfront location overlooking karst peaks, Demo's outdoor terrace is the perfect spot to come for a sundowner of quality craft beers. Its four beers on tap are all from Trip Smith microbrewery in Guiyang, with a pale ale, IPAs and a seasonal to go with a menu of pizzas. It attracts a cool crowd of local musos. On Thursday evenings come by for its trivia night (held in English), with beer prizes to be won. Other nights you can expect regular impromptu gigs.

    Kaya

Bars that do not play C-pop or hire pole dancers have a hard time surviving in Yangshuo, which makes this 'Jamaica pub' an anomaly. Run by dreadlocked owner-DJ Topper, Kaya has reggae performances, to go with bass and dubstep, along with quality Chinese craft beers in the fridge. Entry is via the clothes store downstairs, giving it a speakeasy feel.

    Mojo Bar

Way above the throngs choking Xijie, Mojo Bar – on the 6th floor and roof of the Alshan Hotel – has the most amazing outdoor terrace with wraparound views of the Avatar -like karst landscape. It's regarded as the place to kick on into the night, with pool and cheap beer (Tsingtao ¥20): it's where things get loose late in the evening. Find your way to No 18 Xijie, the Alshan Hotel, and take the lift to the 4th floor before walking up the last two flights to Mojo Bar.

    Aroma Tea House

Guilin's best spot for coffee is this arty cafe that roasts its beans onsite, sourced anywhere from Yunnan to Ethiopia. Its peaceful location by Rong Lake offers a lovely getaway from the busy streets, and there's a courtyard garden to enjoy an array of teas, juice blends and selection of wine. Also here is an attached museum (entrance fee ¥98) featuring the owner's private collection of ceramics, traditional paintings, detailed dioramas and dinosaur fossils from around China.

    Rusty Bolt

The perfect antidote to West St's tacky nightlife is this divey neighbourhood bar, hidden down an alley on the 3rd floor of a residential building. It's primarily a hangout for local and expat climbers, but it's good for anyone looking for a beer and lively company. It has a pool table, beers in the fridge and outdoor terrace overlooking a sprawling banyan tree.

    Unico Bar

One of a string of intimate (and near identical) bars across from the southwest section of Rong Lake is this cool little spot that's split over two adjoining spaces. Here you can enjoy locally brewed craft beers on tap (including one produced using osmanthus flower), along with cocktails and bar snacks, accompanied by a soundtrack of blues, rock and jazz.

    WOW Hangout

One of downtown's best drinking choices is this pub-style venue that's popular with young Chinese professionals, students and expats here to unwind with scarily cheap mixer drinks served by the bucket. The music is loud, so it's not great for conversation, but it has a fun boozy atmosphere, and things often get loose later in the night.

    Huxinting Teahouse

Well hidden away on a small leafy island in the middle of Rong Lake is this charming and tranquil Chinese teahouse, accessed by a walkway that juts out to the water. It's within a traditional wooden pavilion and offers a range of tea sets to enjoy while gazing out to the water, as locals gather for spirited games of mahjong.

    Zermo Coffee

Down a leafy street is this chic microroaster doing pour-over coffees brewed using single-origin beans from Yunnan, Central America and Ethiopia. Its plant-filled, contemporary decor will suit freelance travellers looking for a workspace.

    Kong

A tiny but classy inner-city bar where you'll get a friendly welcome as you prop yourself up at the bar to order from a selection of its well-made cocktails. It's down a small walkway off Gecun Lu.
