Named after the ship used by Norwegian explorer Amundsen, the first person to successfully traverse the Northwest Passage, this hamlet (www.gjoahaven.com) grew around a Hudson's Bay Company trading post that was setup here in the 1920s. Since September 2014, Gjoa Haven has been the epicenter of excitement, generated by Parks Canada finally locating HMS Erebus, one of the two ships of the vanished Franklin expedition of 1845, just south of King William Island, off the coast of the Adelaide Peninsula.
