Welcome to Up the Hume
The multi-lane Hume Fwy (M31) neatly bypasses every town on its way north from Melbourne to the Victorian–NSW border. This used to be a track leading to Sydney, with bullock wagons piled with wheat waiting for those ahead to make the next river crossing. Even 45 years ago, heading north was a jostle of sedans, caravans and trucks on a narrow, potholed road. The towns along, or just off, the Hume Fwy are generally genuine little country towns whose distinguishing features are their colonial-style pubs and local bakeries.
