Welcome to Benalla
Benalla Visitor Centre, by the lake, shares a home with the Costume & Kelly Museum, which has interesting costume exhibits, a display on local war hero Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop and Ned Kelly's sash. Benalla Art Gallery has a collection of Australian art, including paintings from the Heidelberg School, and a cafe that spreads onto a deck overlooking the lake. Nearby is the moving Weary Dunlop Memorial.
A recent community initiative has created some fabulous street art on many of the local buildings, resulting in the annual Wall to Wall Street Art Festival.
The Winton Wetlands, 23km northeast of Benalla, is the largest wetlands restoration project in the Southern Hemisphere.
