Welcome to Reserva Faunística Península Valdés

The wildlife viewing is truly exceptional, the undisputed main attraction being the endangered ballena franca austral (southern right whale). The warmer, more enclosed waters along the Golfo Nuevo, Golfo San José and the coastline near Caleta Valdés from Punta Norte to Punta Hércules become prime breeding zones for right whales between June and mid-December.

Sheep estancias occupy the peninsula’s interior, which includes one of the world’s lowest continental depressions, the salt flats of Salina Grande and Salina Chica, 42m below sea level. At the turn of the 20th century, Puerto Pirámides, the peninsula’s only village, was the shipping port for the salt extracted from Salina Grande.
