Welcome to Tokat
The town's history features an inevitable roll-call of Anatolian conquerors. The Hittites and Phrygians, the Medes and the Persians, the empire of Alexander the Great, the kingdom of Pontus, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Danışmend Turks, the Seljuks and the Mongol İlkhanids all once marched through this trading entrepôt.
Physically on the rise due to seven centuries of sodden silt, Tokat's architectural treats guarantee the town won't sink into obscurity any time soon. You can easily spend a day here exploring the mazy riddle of back alleys, visiting the excellent museum and getting knuckled by Tokat's notorious masseurs.
