Welcome to Kastamonu
At first glance Kastamonu doesn't seem to be anything other than a busy mid-sized town of little obvious tourist appeal, but veer into the helter-skelter of alleyways off bustling Cumhuriyet Caddesi and you'll discover decaying remnants of former glory at every turn. A wealth of Ottoman mansions slowly slumping and sliding into picturesque abandon line Kastamonu's lanes, while market streets throng with locals on a bargain-hunt. It's a glimpse of provincial Turkey yet to be trussed up for the tourists while just out of town, Kasaba's intricately carved and painted wooden mosque provides enough of a reason to spend the night.
