Welcome to Ayvacık
Ayvacık's major attraction is its huge Friday market, which is held in the streets around the otogar (bus station) and Kültür Park. Farmers head here from surrounding villages to sell fresh produce, and the variety and quality of their offerings is quite astounding. Those villagers in long satiny overcoats or brightly coloured headscarves are the descendants of Turkmen nomads (Yörüks) who settled in this area in the 15th century. The town is also known for its diminutive carpets; some 20 villages and Turkmen communities in the region still produce them.
