Welcome to Albreda, Juffureh & Kunta Kinteh Island
When Alex Haley, the American author of Roots, traced his origins to Juffureh, the tiny village quickly turned into a popular tourist destination. Together with adjoining Albreda village and Kunta Kinteh Island further offshore, this historical site preserves the memory of the dark legacy of slavery. The entire area was named a Unesco World Heritage site in 2003. Today the area can feel like a bit of a tourist circus, though it still remains a pilgrimage site for Americans with African heritage.
