Alichur (Km828) is situated in the middle of spectacular high-altitude scenery. In fact the only way to reach it is via three passes each of which is over 4200m. The vegetation (or relative lack thereof) reflects this above-the-treeline location. On closer inspection the landscape is not as barren as it seems, however, with carpets of low-lying Alpine flowers hunkered down against the bitter winds and thick-furred marmots and yaks grazing on tentative grass shoots.
The gateway to two famously beautiful lakes, Bulun-Kul and Yasil-Kul, Alichur itself is a wide scattering of low, whitewashed homesteads. This is the westernmost limit of Mugab Region's predominantly Kyrgyz community whose occasional yurts dot the mountain-edged plain that stretches over 50km east.
A police post at Km928 guards the entrance to Murgab proper.
