Welcome to Centovalli
Centovalli ('Hundred Valleys') takes its name from the innumerable small side valleys that splinter away from it. Grey stone villages clinging to the rugged hillsides make serene bases for mountain hikes. Leading to Domodossola in Italy, the road through the valley winds out in a string of tight curves, high on the north flank of the Melezzo, a bottle-green Alpine river largely held in check by a dam. An atmospheric way to experience it is aboard the train from Locarno to Domodossola, which chugs deep into true wilderness.
