Private Girona and Besalu Jewish History Tour

Your 7-hour private adventure begins when a friendly, professional guide picks you up at your hotel and begins the journey to the city of Girona. Home to a historic Jewish quarter, Girona has steep steps, old streets and barri vellshops to charm and delight the visitor. Despite the expulsion of Jews in 1492 from the area, today the ‘call dels jueus’ remains in the same location it has been since the Middle Ages. Break for lunch and chose to buy something in town or just wander the streets before continuing on to the small country village of Besalú. This town has been a Mikveh since the 12th-century and had a synagogue as far back as the 13th-century. It remains one of the most important Jewish areas in Catalonia and in 1966 was declared a national historic-artistic site. Traces of ancient Jewish history continue to be discovered in Besalú and the town remains similar to how it was back when it was home to a rich Jewish population. Wander the irregular medieval streets and snap photos of the ancient steps, arches, stone houses and shops that still sell local handicrafts and goods. Don’t forget to pass over the striking Romanesque bridge that provides access to the town over the Fluvià river, one of the most memorable sights in town. After a full day of exploring, your guide will drop you off at your hotel at the end of the tour.

Barcelona to Besalu, Medieval Towns Small-Group Full-Day Tour

The medieval tour will begin in Barcelona, where our guide will pick you up at your hotel with a private vehicle. In a small group of maximum 8 people you will start this amazing journey back in time. Your first destination will be Vic, then you will visit the most beautiful and magic towns of Catalonia like the charming Santa Pau or the spectacular Castellfollit de la Roca, to finally finish in the Catalan medieval jewel: Besalú. Your next destination will be Vic, a town that offers visitors one of the most memorable medieval settings in all of Catalunya. Due to the town’s destruction and reconstruction after the Saracen invasion in the 9th Century, Vic has been completely rebuilt. A whole new city grew around some of Catalunya’s most important landmarks, including the Episcopal Museum, Cathedral and Main Square (also home of a popular weekly market). Our professional guide will point out some of the most important corners of the medieval city, including the paintings of Josep Maria Sert in the Cathedral, and the Roman temple. He will share with you the history and hidden secrets of these wonderful relics along the way. After the tour, your guide will give you tips on where to find authentic Catalan cuisine for lunch. On your way to Besalú, your group will cross la Garrotxa , where you will observe volcanoes and other magnificent geological structures, before arriving to Santa Pau, where you will do a tour through one of the most charming towns of Historic Catalunya, where, in the company of your guide, you will have the chance to walk down along the beautiful medieval streets of this town and visit the main square. You will also stop at the foot of Castellfollit de la Roca, a spectacular medieval town that hangs from the edge of a basalt cliff. This is a great place to take some photos while enjoying the view. Our journey back in time will end in Besalú, your final and most important stop. With its incredibly rich heritage and wide array of monuments, Besalú offers visitors one of the best-preserved medieval settings of Catalonia. The town was even classified a Historical and Artistic National Monument in 1966. Our guide will explain the importance of the Jewish community that once resided in the city, from the 9th to the 15th century, and share with you the patrimonial inheritance that this community left behind. You will also be taken to one of the most special corners of the city, and get the chance to cross the famous Romanesque bridge of Besalú, which is a must for anyone visiting this medieval city.
