Welcome to Coffee Bay
Because of its beautiful kilometre-long beach and easy access to dramatic surrounding scenery, this once-remote village has become something of an essential Wild Coast stop for backpackers and South African hippies. The village itself doesn't have much charm but it's a great base for those who want to hike, surf, enjoy cultural visits or simply relax. In June and July, it's also popular with visitors who want to enjoy the sardine run experience.
No-one is sure how tiny Coffee Bay got its name, but there is a theory that a ship, wrecked here in 1863, deposited its cargo of coffee beans on the beach.
