Welcome to Thurso to Durness
Ten miles west of Thurso, the Dounreay nuclear power station was the first in the world to supply mains electricity; it's currently being decommissioned. The clean-up is planned to be finished by 2025; it’s still a major source of employment for the region.
Beyond, Melvich overlooks a fine beach and there are great views from Strathy Point (a 2-mile drive from the coast road, then a 15-minute walk).
Bettyhill is a pretty village that overlooks a magnificent stretch of coastline, and the scenery just improves as you head west through Coldbackie and Tongue, with a succession of gorgeous sea lochs, stunning beaches and striking rock formations backed by imposing hills and mountains.
