Coldbackie has outstanding views over sandy beaches, turquoise waters and offshore islands. Two miles further is Tongue, with the evocative 14th-century ruins of Castle Varrich, once a Mackay stronghold. To get to the castle, take the trail next to the Royal Bank of Scotland – it’s an easy stroll. Just west of town, the Kyle of Tongue is one of the region's most spectacular sea lochs. Seals are easily spotted from the causeway across it.
