Geumsan Ginseng Market

Chungcheongnam-do

The country's leading ginseng market is surprising low-tech and wonderfully aromatic. Heaps of fresh ginseng are on display in plastic trays and open cardboard boxes. Stop by any of the stalls, run mostly by grandmotherly types, and you can expect an aggressive sales pitch.

The Herbal Medicine Market in the next-door building contains a panoply of consumer products thought to bring health benefits. In addition to a bewildering array of roots, shoots and extracts, there's a good supply of phellinus linteus, a medical mushroom that's boiled into a tea.

From the bus terminal entrance, walk left along the canal. Turn right at the hospital (look for the green cross), cross the bridge and turn left at the first street.
