Brooklyn's first full-scale Whole Foods is a colossal emporium of gourmet goodies, frequented by well-heeled shoppers filling their carts with organic groceries. More interesting to travelers is the in-house coffee roaster, sprawling prepared-foods area (with salad bar and hot buffet) and small upstairs bar with 16 craft beers on tap and a small food menu.
You can order burgers, truffle-oil-flavored fries, mac 'n' cheese, kale salad, unique microbrews, wine and sangria. There's outdoor seating with fine views over NYC's most polluted waterway. An Instagrammer's delight!
Wondering about that little white building stuck right on the corner at Third Ave? It's the recently restored Coignet Building (1872), a landmarked, two-story Italianate structure that was one of the first reinforced-concrete buildings in the US.
