    Live at the Elephant

This may just be the most appealing live-music venue in town. It draws a trendy, upmarket crowd with its fair share of Nairobi hipsters for the regular program of up-and-coming artists (mostly Kenyan with some from further afield in Africa). Check out the Facebook page to see what's coming up. To get here from central Nairobi, take Waiyaki Way through Westlands and turn left at James Gichuru Rd – Kanjata Rd is the first street on the left.

    Blankets & Wine

This monthly picnic-concert is one of the best-loved features on Nairobi's live-music circuit. Musicians vary, but the underlying principle is to support local and other East African acts, from acoustic and singer-songwriter to rock and roots. Families are welcome. The site is off Langata Rd.

    Kenya National Theatre

This is Nairobi's major theatre and performing-arts venue. As well as contemporary and classic plays and musicals, there are special events such as beauty pageants, which are less highbrow but still culturally interesting. Check out the Daily Nation to see what’s on. It’s opposite the Norfolk Hotel.

With live music most nights, this is the place to see Lingala music performed by Congolese bands. Be prepared for mellifluous rhythms and a fair bit of gyrating, shaking and sweating.
