Takeno (竹野) is a pleasant little fishing village of charred-wood homes and a summer resort with two good sandy beaches – Takeno-hama (竹野浜) and Benten-hama (弁天浜) – outfitters for outdoor activities and a public onsen. Activities on offer include kayaking, snorkelling, and hiking on Nekozaki, a hilly peninsula that juts out over 1km into the Sea of Japan.
Both of Takeno's beaches can be reached on foot from Takeno Station. For Takeno-hama, go straight out of the station and walk for around 20 minutes. For Benten-hama, from the station turn left at the first light and walk straight for about 15 minutes.
