Jembrana, Bali's most sparsely populated district, offers beautiful scenery and little tourism development, with the exception of the surfing action at Medewi. The main road follows the south coast most of the way to Negara, and at Pulukan you can turn north to enjoy a remote and scenic drive to north Bali.
Once capital of the region, Jembrana is the centre of the gamelan jegog, a gamelan using huge bamboo instruments that produces a low-pitched, resonant sound. Performances often feature gamelan groups engaging in a musical contest. Your best bet to hear this music is at a local festival. Have your driver or another local ask around to see if one is on while you're there.
