Situated on a busy industrial firth just 7km south of the Danish border, Flensburg is sometimes still dubbed ‘Rumstadt’ for its prosperous 18th-century trade in liquor with the Caribbean. Reminders of its seafaring, rum-trading days echo across the port area. The old town and the harbour are lovely and lively, making this one of our favourite towns in northern Germany.
