The tree-lined jaunt between Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie offers little more than forest views out the car window. Elliot Lake, the largest community in the area, is popular with retirees on a tight budget and, in winter, snowmobilers. Indeed, the region is a hub for outdoor activities year-round, including hiking, fishing, canoeing and cross-country skiing.
The little town made headlines in 2012 after an accident at the town mall, when a concrete section of its roof catastrophically collapsed, without warning. The slab fell three floors, taking the lives of two women and injuring 19.
