Well worth a short stop if you're driving the N14 Malle–Breda road, Hoogstraten's busy main street is attractively lined with trained linden trees and dominated by the magnificent belfry of St-Katherinakerk. Next door, a matching 1534 building hosts a helpful tourist office and 250m further north lies the pretty little Unesco-listed begijnhof where a free museum explains local history: the town was chartered in 1210 and was a dutchy of the Holy Roman Empire for half a century from 1740.
