Welcome to Flemish Brabant
Flemish Brabant (Vlaams Brabant) entirely surrounds Brussels but doesn't include it. The provincial centre is the historic county and university town of Leuven that's widely known, like nearby Hoegaarden, for its great breweries. If you're driving from Leuven to Tongeren, don't miss stops in Belgium's sugar capital Tienen, with its Roman heritage, and in little Zoutleeuw, to peruse a superb church and town hall. Alternatively, if driving to Hasselt, dedicate a few extra minutes to the baroque pilgrimage town of Scherpenheuvel and an hour or two to attractive Diest, with its fine begijnhof. The overgrown abbey village of Grimbergen makes a good day trip from nearby Brussels.
