A crescent of orange sand shaded by coconut groves, Playa Colorada draws weekend hordes of young Venezuelan party-goers and sun-seekers. But it’s very quiet during the week and an easy day trip from both Santa Fe and Puerto La Cruz. A few small shops sell produce, bread and other foodstuffs, and scores of food shacks open on the beach for weekends. There are a few small posadas, though no banks or internet access.
An adventure-sports boot camp, Spanish language school and an excellent place to meet up with other energetic travelers, Jakera Lodge offers dorm accommodations with communal meals and scores of scuba, canyoning and kayak outings. Its full-day boat tours to do bouldering at Isla de Mono (BsF245) are very popular. Look for its corrugated steel gate on the highway.
