Welcome to Okanogan River Valley
Okanogan – derived from the native Salish word for 'rendezvous' – is the county capital (population 2576), 29 miles east of Twisp where US 20 meets US 97. In recent decades Okanogan merged with the nearby town of Omak (population 4792), though neither settlement is a budding tourist center.
Omak is famous for the Omak Stampede. This well-known spectacle includes the notorious 'Suicide Race,' a 210ft plunge down a 60-degree slope on horseback followed by the fording of the 50yd-wide Okanogan River. The event has raised the ire of animal-rights groups for the danger it poses to the horses.
