Welcome to La Plata & Charles County
At the northern edge of Southern Maryland, Charles County is dotted with parks, many hugging the Potomac River. The region is also home to several historic sites dating to the earliest days of the country. Accokeek, a quilt of farms, fields and forests, is the first town out of DC and a popular retreat for scientists and intellectuals who want to live in a rural community within orbit of the capital. The pretty Indian Head Peninsula along the Potomac rolls into the town of La Plata, the county seat. Three miles southwest of La Plata is the Port Tobacco Historic District. Established in 1634, it was once a busy port town.
