Welcome to Assateague Island
The 37-mile-long island is divided into three sections: Assateague State Park in Maryland; federally administered Assateague Island National Seashore; and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia. For an overview, check out the Plan your Visit section of the National Park Service (www.nps.gov/asis) website or pick up the Assateague Island National Seashore pamphlet, which has a helpful map.
As well as swimming and sunbathing, recreational activities include birding, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, camping, crabbing and fishing. There are no food or drink services on the Maryland side of the island in the off season. Don't forget insect repellent: the mosquitoes and biting horseflies can be ferocious!
