Welcome to East Haddam
The town came into the spotlight at the turn of the 20th century on account of two of its more flamboyant residents, actor William Hooker Gillette (of Sherlock Holmes fame) and wealthy local banker and merchant William Goodspeed. Goodspeed's philanthropy indirectly led to the formation of a company which wrote and produced more than a dozen Broadway musicals and as many Tony Award–winning shows.
With residents like Gillette and Goodspeed, East Haddam became a regular stopover on the summer circuit for New Yorkers, who traveled up on Goodspeed’s steamship. These days, it's a sweet, sleepy town which will most interest history and nature buffs.
