Welcome to Payson & Mogollon Rim
Payson was founded by gold miners in 1882, although its real riches turned out to be above ground. Vast pine forests fed a booming timber industry, ranchers ran cattle along the Mogollon Rim and down to the Tonto Basin, and wild game was plentiful. Frontier life here captivated Western author Zane Grey, who kept a cabin outside town. Prime activities are hunting and fishing in the forests, lakes and streams around the Rim. The World's Oldest Continuous Rodeo has been held in Payson every August since 1884.
