Archaeology & Ethnography Museum

Black Sea Coast

At the time of research, Samsun's foremost museum was closed pending long-term reconstruction and extension. Its most striking attraction is a huge Romano-Byzantine mosaic found at Amisos depicting Thetis and Achilles (from the Trojan War), along with elegant gold jewellery dating from the 1st century BC – the time of the legendary Pontic King Mithridates VI.
