Welcome to Niuatoputapu

In 2009, following the Samoa earthquake, Niuatoputapu suffered extensive tsunami damage and nine people died.

Hihifo, the Niua Group’s ‘capital’, has a police station, a post office and a small store. Cash and travellers cheques can be changed at the Treasury, though it sometimes runs out of cash: BYO pa’anga is a better idea. There is no ATM on the island.

Boat trips, including to nearby Tafahi, can be negotiated with local fishers. There’s good diving outside the reef, but no diving equipment is available on the island.

Kalolaine Guesthouse offers up warm hospitality in a village home with a spacious lounge and neat rooms. Guests can use the kitchen or book meals in advance. To find it, just ask a local to point the way.
