Welcome to Idre
In winter, sleepy Idre transforms ever so slightly into a popular ski area for those in the know. Wide open spaces and fewer crowds mean plenty of choice for downhill and cross-country aficionados who don't mind the five- to six-hour journey from Oslo or Stockholm.
Idre's closest neighbour, Grövelsjön, lies 38km northwest, close to the Norwegian border on the edge of the wild 664-sq-km Långfjällets Nature Reserve, noted for its lichen-covered heaths, moraine heaps and ancient forests. Reindeer from Sweden’s southernmost Sami community wander throughout the area.
