Welcome to São Tomé (city)
São Tomė city ought to be one of the world's great port towns. It contains an extraordinary collection of colonial buildings, located on a broad curving bay, and is the economic and political hub of the country. Unfortunately STP's long economic decline has devastated its infrastructure. The historic architecture is decaying on every street, the roads are choked with potholes, and the central market is filthy. Instead of saving its heritage, the government has spent millions on the BISTP, a concrete and glass bank that looks wildly out of place – and has no international ATM! It is this contrast between what should be, and what is, that hits home. Still, the leve leve (easy easy) attitude prevails, allowing for an eye-opening visit. Stay long enough for a plate of world-class seafood, the city's finest attribute.
