Welcome to Te Waewae & Colac Bays
Driving west to east along SH99, pause at McCracken's Rest, the most impressive lookout point along the Southern Scenic Route. Admire views of wind-lashed Te Waewae Bay (and, if you're lucky, Hector's dolphins and southern right whales). Seven kilometres further, stroll along the sparkly sands at Orepuki, aka Gemstone Beach, before continuing a further 4km towards Monkey Island, a former Māori whaling lookout.
If you're travelling from the east, driving this stretch of SH99 provides a first glimpse of the snowcapped Southern Alps descending into the sea, framing the western end of the bay.
