Welcome to Otgon Tenger Uul Strictly Protected Area
One of Mongolia’s most sacred mountains, Otgon Tenger Uul (4031m), has been the spiritual abode of the gods since the days of Chinggis Khaan, and is an important place of pilgrimage for many Mongolians. The mountain, 60km east of Uliastai, is the highest peak in the Khangai Nuruu and part of the Otgon Tenger Uul Strictly Protected Area.
Trekking opportunities abound, although climbing sacred Otgon Tenger Uul itself is prohibited, and attempting to do so could incur the wrath of the authorities in Uliastai. Most travellers content themselves with viewing the peak from the smaller Dayan Uul, with the option of continuing down to Khökh Nuur for swimming, horse trekking and camping.
