    Batey

Mojitos sweetened with freshly pressed cane sugar are the main attraction at this popular Cuban bar, with fun music acts in the rear garden. Most nights the crowd spills into the street, while inside cane is pressed on top of an iconic, painted VW bug.

    La Buena Vida

A popular beachside restaurant-bar with sand floors, swings and a drink menu with gimmicky cocktail names such as 'The Viagra,' which offers you 'a stiff one.' The restaurant (mains M$85 to M$240) is very good here as well, with popular items such as the Tic kin xic fish (grilled fish in a Yucatecan sauce, M$160).

    Tiny Tiki Hut

If you're tired of Mexico and need some Hawaii in your night, head to Tiny Tiki Hut, with tasty original cocktails, old Tiki faves like mai tais, and (loud record scratching sound here)…ramen noodles all on the menu. Oddly, it all fits perfectly and you can actually have a conversation here, unlike most other Playa bars.

    La Bodeguita del Medio

The writing is literally on the walls (and on the lampshades, and pretty much everywhere) at this Cuban restaurant-bar. After a few mojitos you'll be dancing the night away to live cubana music. Get here at 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday for free salsa lessons.

  • Nightlife in Playa del Carmen

    Playa 69

This popular gay dance club proudly features foreign strippers from such far-flung places as Australia and Brazil, and it stages weekend drag-queen shows. It may also open Tuesdays at key vacation times. Find it at the end of the narrow alley.

    Bara Bara

The party usually spills out onto the street at this popular bar just south of the plaza. Bara Bara spins the best tunes in town, prepares martinis that would have made Sinatra proud and has a foosball table!

  • Nightlife in Tulum

    Clandestino

There are several bars here and a bunch of tables, all clustered around a cenote (yes!) that's actually swimmable, so if you get bored with your drink or want to cool off (or show off!) then just dive right in. Nobody will mind, and the water is as clear as glass. Drinks are excellent, with a number of original cocktails and the usual beach faves.

  • Nightlife in Playa del Carmen

    Dirty Martini Lounge

The Dirty Martini Lounge doesn't have a foam machine, there's no mechanical bull and there's minimal nudity – a refreshing change for crazy Playa. The decor is something you'd find in the American West, with comfy cowhide upholstery and brown wooden panels, with a dance space and live music by locally popular bands.

  • Nightlife in Tulum

    Papaya Playa Project

Trendy hotel Papaya Playa Project hosts monthly full-moon parties and Saturday DJ nights with resident and guest spinsters at its beachside club. It's 500m south of the T-junction. There's usually a cover charge.

  • Nightlife in Playa del Carmen

    Caiman Tugurio

Kind of hard to find in Playa – a bar with cool music where you can just go for a few relaxed drinks. No cover, no dance floor, just a great place to chill with friends.

    Posada Amor

Posada Amor has a quiet bar where you can listen to cover bands play on Monday and Thursday night. It's located southwest of the plaza.
