    Le Marlin Bleu

The coolest, most sociable spot in Anse aux Anglais, this restaurant gets the thumbs up from expats and is dominated by larger-than-life Mega, the friendly owner who makes sure that everyone's having a good time. The food is excellent (we especially loved the octopus salad), with a good mix of seafood, pizza and local dishes.

    Chez Robert et Solange

This place is the essence of Rodrigues: fresh fish cooked in simple surroundings by the sea. It's 100m through the trees from the beach and with expertly cooked food. When you sit down, you'll be offered whatever it has (usually grilled chicken, grilled fish and octopus and papaya salads).

    La Belle Rodriguaise

Perfected recipes by Françoise, author of a respected Rodriguan cookbook, are served on a breezy veranda with never-ending ocean views. Meals are mostly for guests of the hotel, but ring ahead if you'd like to crash the party.

  • Restaurants in Port Mathurin

    Aux Deux Frères

Perched above a plaza of tour operators, Port Mathurin's slickest haunt serves local and international dishes in swish surrounds. The marlin fumé avec gingembre (smoked marlin with ginger) as a starter is small and simple but filled with taste. The restaurant also does pizza, pork brochettes and (when available) Creole sausages.

  • Restaurants in Rodrigues

    Le Pandanus

This gem of a place, one of a few out on the northwestern coast, has an elevated dining room that looks straight out to sea. The meals are lovingly prepared and the usual table d'hôte hospitality and authenticity is at the heart of everything it does. The seafood is excellent, with octopus especially well prepared.

  • Restaurants in Rodrigues

    Madame Larose

On the road down to the beach in Pointe Coton, Madame Larose is a little local gem, with no-frills service and surrounds but good, honest cooking. Fresh fish, an above-average salade d'ourite (octopus salad), a mean chicken curry and good salads are among the dishes on offer.

  • Restaurants in Rodrigues

Hikers tackling a scenic east-coast jaunt can take a break at this casual, lunch-only affair with painted pastel tables. Savour the home-cooked seafood (smoked marlin, grilled marlin, calamari, prawns and lobster) or house speciality ceviché de thon (like a tuna tartare).

  • Restaurants in Rodrigues

    Chez Paulina

On the road down to Tyrodig, this terrific little place is often packed out at lunch time, especially on weekends. The price-to-quality ratio is particularly high and it does wonderful things on a shoestring with octopus, calamari and fish; its curries are especially worth trying.

  • Restaurants in Rodrigues

    Chez Jeannette

Traditional Rodriguan flavours are what you'll get at this friendly guesthouse hidden in the hills. Dishes always feature an assortment of vegetables grown in the property's gardens.

  • Restaurants in Rodrigues

    Mengoz Snack

It doesn't get much simpler than this, but that's why we like it. In Mont Lubin, next to where the main road through the island branches to Grande Montagne, Port Mathurin and the southwest, this fine little snack bar serves up fried rice or noodles, often with a main dish such as chop suey. A real slice of local life.

  • Restaurants in Rodrigues

    Koki Boner

An attractive spot if you're spending the day on the Pointe Coton beach, Koki Boner has laid-back service and does a good mix of snacks (sandwiches, soups) and mains such as grills and curries. It's not Rodrigues' most extensive menu and there's not a whole lot of imagination in the cooking, but the salads in particular are fresh and tasty.

    Resto La Caverne

If you're visiting Caverne Patate or the François Leguat Reserve, you could do worse than stop by this quiet little local place above a small grocery store. The octopus dishes are particularly good. It's opposite the turn-off to Caverne Patate.
