Set in a beautiful old house, Le Jardin des Sens has knowledgeable staff who offer massage (50 minutes, Ar40,000) and reflexology (20 minutes, Ar20,000).

    Ampangorinana has an interesting craft market with beautiful cut-work embroidered tablecloths and curtains, excellent wood carvings and paintings spilling out of almost every house. There are also spices, vanilla and massage oils on sale.

    You'll go in here for the chocolate, but then be tempted by the zebu-horn and shell jewellery, raffia bags, vanilla, shells and all sorts of gifts. It's difficult to tear yourself away from this gem.

    Madagascar produces superb chocolate and here's a wonderful place to buy it. The exquisite creations cost around Ar10,000 for 100g.

    Souvenir Stalls

    On the northern side of Rue Passot between the post office and the BNI-CL bank are a number of souvenir stalls. They sell precious stones, crystals, batiks, jewellery, metalwork and T-shirts. You can try bargaining here, which you can't do in shops.

    Société de Rhum Arrangé

    If you’d like to take a taste of Madagascar home with you, why not plump for a bottle of rhum arrangé (homemade rum with fruit inside)? There are more than 20 flavours to choose from at this little place, from vanilla to cinnamon, liquorice to coconut. The 180ml plastic bottles (Ar10,000) make perfect presents.
