Bucolic Kandava, just off the Rīga–Ventspils road on the way to Kuldīga, is a charming collection of stone and wooden houses, a soaring church spire and traces of a fallen empire in the form of Livonian Order castle ruins. From the top of the castle mound, there is an excellent view of the fine stone bridge (1875) – one of Latvia’s oldest – across the Abava River.
Kandava’s tourist office is located directly along the route that connects Rīga to Kuldīga. The affable staff can help you sort out bike rental.
Plosti, further along the Abava River towards Sabile, offers bike hire, canoe hire, horse rides and guided paddles down the Abava in addition to accommodation. Another guesthouse nearby, Plostkrogs, is a great place to have lunch along the river.
