While Sicily’s southeastern tip offers little in the way of excitement, its electric colours, laidback atmosphere and relative lack of development make it a relaxing day trip from Noto. From town, the SP19 heads south towards Pachino, a busy, run-of-the-mill market town surrounded by fertile vineyards. A few kilometres before it lies the altogether more charming fishing village of Marzamemi, which doubles as a low-key summer resort. Once in Marzamemi, a seafood meal by crashing waves or a Sicilian-inspired cocktail on the piazza does wonders for the soul.
From Marzamemi, the road follows the coast south to Portopalo di Capo Passero, a popular summer hang-out. The small island off the coast is Isola Capo Passero, with a hulking castle and nature reserve. In between Noto and the cape are several sights worth stopping at, from Roman mosaics to rugged beaches.
