Waterville is an old-fashioned seaside resort strung along the N72 at the head of Ballinskelligs Bay, and is known for its golf and fishing. The Waterville Golf Links is renowned, and construction of a second world-class course at the opposite end of town is underway. To Waterville's south, the headlands Hogs Head Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones II, will open in 2018.
Silent movie star Charlie Chaplin famously holidayed in Waterville in the 1960s with his extended family, returning every year for more than a decade to the Butler Arms Hotel. A bronze statue of Chaplin beams out from the seafront, and the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival is held here in late August.
