Welcome to Kuhpayeh & Toudeshk
At Kuhpayeh, accommodation is offered in a magnificently restored caravanserai, opposite a set of fine wind catchers guarding the town's cisterns. To be fair, the town isn't especially noteworthy but it captures the sense of staging-post on a former caravan route.
Further east, at 95km from Esfahan, Toudeshk Cho (population just 700) is a classic desert village of mud-brick buildings, badgirs and hospitable locals. It has been hosting foreign cyclists for years and now the excellent homestay located there has become somewhat legendary among independent travellers. It’s a short distance from the larger, more modern village of Toudeshk.
Either town makes for an interesting detour for those who lack the time to delve deeper into the desert.
