Drinking and nightlife in Sulawesi

    The Level

Across from the floating mosque Masjid Amirul Mukminin, the Level actually has three levels: a chill coffee bar on the ground floor, a passable restaurant on the 2nd floor, and a thumping club up top. It's the last that attracts Makassar's young things, and hosts DJs and live bands. Dress sharp (no sandals or flip-flops).

    Gravity Sky Lounge

For the best views in the city, head to this sophisticated bar and restaurant on the 20th floor of Swissbel Hotel. A young crowd comes here for bar snacks, reasonably priced drinks, live bands playing in a glass box and those killer views.

  • Nightlife in Rantepao

Rantepao isn't known for its nightlife but Kafeta is a bubbling local bar with cold Bintang (60,000Rp) and a house band on weekends.

    Kafe Kareba

This long-running beer garden and music stage masquerading as a seafood restaurant on the seafront is popular with locals and visitors till the wee hours of the morning. To be fair, it does have a pretty extensive food menu if you need sustenance.

  • Nightlife in Sengkang

    Cafe Time Out

In a town that does depressingly little to capitalise on its lake- and riverfront location, at least there's Time Out, whose second storey has river views and a welcome breeze. It's popular with teens; expect to be 'selfied'.

    Zona Cafe

This popular club draws a loyal young crowd with its DJs and bands from Jakarta and its regular drink promotions. Things start to kick off after 1am on weekends.

  • Nightlife in Tomohon

Cold beer and live music are the name of the game at this bamboo hangout on the main drag. Also has a good selection of tasty fried snacks.

  • Nightlife in Manado

    Corner Club

Hosting DJs most nights, this thumping joint occupying the corner of Bahu Mall is the best place in town to get your groove on.

  • Nightlife in Makassar

    Ballairate Sunset Bar

Built on stilts over the sea, this is the best-located bar in town, but rarely gets crowded. Walk right through Hotel Pantai Gapura to discover draft Bintang and a perfect view of the sunset from a large deck well-removed from city bustle.

  • Nightlife in Makassar

    Kios Semarang

Climb the stairs to the upper floors where you will be rewarded with a rowdy crowd downing beers and comfort grub (the spicy chicken wings are famous). It's the closest thing to a Makassar drinking institution, sticky floors and all.
